Mike Nelson Returns to Modern Art Oxford After 22 Years

Mike Nelson (b. 1967) will present a new exhibition at Modern Art Oxford from 3 October 2026 to 11 April 2027, his first at the venue since 2004's 'Triple Bluff Canyon'. The site-specific installation combines new and reworked elements, reflecting on the 22-year interval and shifts in personal, political, and cultural landscapes. Themes of travel, memory, displacement, narcissism, and self-portraiture recur, with references to countercultural movements (Woodstock), recent political unrest (US Capitol storming), and wartime periods (Vietnam, Iraq, present). The open-ended environment invites visitors to form their own connections. Nelson, known for psychological assemblages of cultural detritus, lives and works in London; his work is held by Tate, Hayward Gallery, and Moderna Museet.
