Mihail Onaca's Decade-Long Photographic Archive of Rural Transylvania

Romanian photographer Mihail Onaca, a native of Transylvania, has spent over ten years traveling through the region to build a personal visual archive of its rural life. His documentary-style images focus on village streets, wooden gates, weathered faces, and architectural details, capturing a Transylvania far from castles and legends. The photographs range from close-up portraits of elderly women in traditional dress to blue arched doorways hung with handmade textiles, and colorful houses with hand-painted decorations. Onaca's approach seeks meaning in simplicity and unhurried daily rhythms, revealing layers of history and identity through light, texture, and atmosphere. The project is neither a nostalgic celebration nor a documentation of something disappearing, but an attentive look at a region where cultural heritage remains deeply intertwined with everyday life, continuously evolving while retaining distinctive traits.
