Michelangelo Pistoletto's 'Three Mirrors' project promotes 'preventive peace' on digital billboards in nine cities.

exhibition · 2026-04-01

Michelangelo Pistoletto's latest series, 'Three Mirrors,' is showcased daily at 20:26 local time on digital displays in nine cities around the globe until June 30. The renowned Italian Arte Povera artist crafted three pieces on large mirror sheets, filmed at his Cittadellarte foundation in Biella. These works, named Formula of Creation, Statodellarte, and Third Paradise, embody his artistic vision of The Third Paradise. The initiative, organized by UK digital art platform Circa, commenced on April 1 in London’s Piccadilly Lights and expanded to cities like Los Angeles, Accra, Abidjan, Casablanca, Hong Kong, and Seoul. Screenings in Italy will start on April 24 in Milan and Rome. Circa's founder, Josef O'Connor, curated signed editions, with 20% of proceeds benefiting Circa and Pistoletto's educational programs, alongside a donation to the United Nations Global Emergency Response Fund. Pistoletto defines 'preventive peace' as a concept that facilitates the coexistence of opposites without conflict. In a 2025 interview with Art Newspaper, he elaborated that The Third Paradise's three circles symbolize opposites, with a central empty circle serving as a nexus for these forces to foster new creation. Circa collaborates with prominent artists like Shirin Neshat, Ai Weiwei, Olafur Eliasson, and Marina Abramović to convert advertising spaces into arenas for dialogue. O'Connor emphasizes that the project challenges the notion of public screens as meaningful civic platforms.
