Michael Donald's quest to photograph all living World Cup final goalscorers

Photographer Michael Donald embarked on a project in 2007 to photograph every living player who had scored in a World Cup final, discovering only 34 of the 58 such players were still alive. After realizing book sales alone couldn't fund the global travel, he secured backing from a film producer, enabling him to visit 13 countries with a documentary crew over four years. The project included an interview with Brazilian legend Jairzinho, who scored in the 1970 final. Donald's photograph of Jairzinho, taken in Rio de Janeiro's favelas, captures the footballer's current work with local children. During the shoot, Donald's crew faced a tense moment when a local pulled a gun, enforcing an unwritten rule that outsiders must leave by 5pm.
