Micha Levy Collection Showcased in Madrid Exhibition Highlighting Mexican Modern Art

The Micha Levy collection, assembled over more than half a century by hotel entrepreneur Marcos Micha Levy with his wife Vicky, is being presented for the first time in Europe at the Fundación Casa de México in Madrid. The exhibition 'Rebeldías vanguardistas,' curated by Taiyana Pimentel, features approximately one hundred works offering a panoramic view of 20th-century Mexican art. The collection began as a conceptual vision before any artworks were acquired, with Levy designing a home specifically to house future acquisitions. Key holdings include significant works by Diego Rivera, whom Levy deeply admired, including portable murals created for Rivera's 1931 MoMA exhibition. The collection also encompasses other major Mexican muralists like José Clemente Orozco and David Alfaro Siqueiros, alongside modern Mexican artists and international figures including Pablo Picasso, Marcel Duchamp, David Hockney, Anselm Kiefer, and Allen Jones. A notable Duchamp painting from 1910, 'Desnudo con medias negras,' is among the highlights and is currently on loan to a MoMA retrospective. The collection represents one of the largest private holdings dedicated to Miguel Covarrubias, featuring works spanning his entire career. Following Marcos Micha Levy's death in 2023, his children continue to expand the family legacy. The exhibition provides insight into the development of Mexican modernity through Levy's personal perspective as a collector who viewed the practice as an act of cultural reflection and responsibility.
