MH.AP Studio Designs Barcelona Townhouse with Terracotta and Blue Metal Staircase
MH.AP Studio completed a residential project in Barcelona's Poblenou district, converting a narrow plot into a multi-level family home. The studio took over the project after the primary structure was already built by another architect, requiring them to focus on interior spatial planning within existing constraints. The design serves a family of four, balancing structural limitations with Mediterranean-inspired materials. The exterior features beige terracotta tiles that extend from the facade into interior and exterior floors, creating continuity with local traditions. A central blue metal staircase acts as the vertical core, transitioning from a solid storage volume on the lower level to a perforated, light-filtering structure above. Large glass doors connect the living area to a rear patio, while upper levels use timber flooring for warmth. The top floor is a flexible space currently used as a playroom and laundry, with access to a rooftop terrace. The design incorporates exposed heating pipes and terracotta masonry, blending industrial elements with domestic comfort. This project reflects a trend in Barcelona where architectural interventions prioritize material honesty and adaptive use of limited urban space, similar to other local works like the El Born Loft and Neptu Apartment.
