MFA Boston Exhibition Explores 19th-Century Hindu Printmaking from Bengal

The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston will host 'Divine Color: Hindu Prints from Modern Bengal' from January 31 to May 31, 2026. This exhibition examines how 19th-century Bengali artists in Calcutta utilized lithography to create affordable, colorful depictions of Hindu deities, transforming devotional practices and artistic expression. These mass-produced prints, historically overlooked as 'calendar art,' played significant roles in home worship, reflected European artistic influences, and disseminated political ideas across India. The show features over 100 objects, including 38 lithographs from the MFA's collection, marking the first U.S. exhibition dedicated to this material.
