Mexico City Launches 19 Football-Themed Exhibitions for 2026 FIFA World Cup

Mexico City is preparing to host 19 exhibitions centered on football as part of the 2026 FIFA World Cup celebrations. The initiative, called the Host City Mexico City Cultural Corridor, involves 17 museums and cultural landmarks across the city. The exhibitions explore various aspects of the sport, from its design and cultural impact to its influence on contemporary art. Key venues include the Franz Mayer Museum, which has opened 'Fútbol. Diseñando una pasión' (Football. Designing a passion), focusing on design, engineering, and aesthetics in football's evolution. The Jumex Museum will present 'Fútbol y Arte: Esa misma emoción' (Football and art: That same emotion), featuring contemporary artworks by international creators inspired by the game. The National Museum of Anthropology will host a June exhibition of work by American photographer Annie Leibovitz, including her iconic sports imagery. Other participating institutions aim to highlight Mexican culture for an anticipated 3 million World Cup visitors, with shows at the Center for Immersive Arts on surrealist Leonora Carrington and at the Tamayo Museum featuring retrospectives of Rufino Tamayo and 1980s Mexican artists. Some exhibitions have already opened, while others will launch closer to the World Cup start date of June 11, 2026. Mexico is hosting the tournament for the third time, sharing duties with the U.S. and Canada.
