Metropolitan Museum to Present First Major U.S. Exhibition of Finnish Painter Helene Schjerfbeck
The Metropolitan Museum of Art will host 'Seeing Silence: The Paintings of Helene Schjerfbeck' from December 5, 2025, to April 5, 2026. This marks the inaugural comprehensive U.S. showcase for the Finnish artist, featuring approximately 60 canvases. Schjerfbeck, born in Helsinki in 1862, created work throughout her life in Finland despite personal challenges and historical turmoil. The display aims to introduce her distinctive artistic vision to American audiences, as she remains widely recognized in Nordic nations but less known internationally. The presentation is supported by Elsa A. Brule and developed in partnership with the Finnish National Gallery / Ateneum Art Museum.
