Metropolitan Museum's Newly Acquired Rosso Fiorentino Painting Sparks Online Reactions

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has acquired a recently identified early 16th-century Mannerist painting by Italian artist Rosso Fiorentino titled 'Madonna and Child with Saint John the Evangelist' (1512-13). The work, described as the artist's earliest known surviving painting, depicts the Virgin Mary with an infant Jesus whose muscular form has generated extensive commentary on the museum's Instagram post. During restoration, conservators discovered a previously obscured figure of Saint John the Evangelist. Museum director Max Hollein called the painting a rare and pivotal early work. The online response, featuring contemporary slang descriptions, has drawn parallels to the Mannerist movement's departure from classical tradition.
