Merikokeb Berhanu's Asian debut at Esther Schipper Seoul

exhibition · 2026-06-10

Esther Schipper Seoul presents Merikokeb Berhanu's first solo exhibition in Asia, titled 'Cellular Memory,' featuring seven new paintings. The Ethiopian-born artist, based in the US for nearly a decade, blends Ethiopian art history with modernist influences. She studied under Getahun Assefa at Addis Ababa University's Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, receiving her Diploma of Fine Arts in 2002. Assefa, part of a generation expanding on modernists like Skunder Boghossian, emphasized abstraction and social engagement, an influence evident in Berhanu's work.
