Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta Achieves LEED Platinum and TRUE Platinum Sustainability Certifications
Inaugurated in 2017, the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta stands out as a pioneering example of sustainable sports venue design. It was the first professional sports stadium in North America to achieve LEED Platinum certification and, in 2023, it became the first to receive TRUE Platinum certification, successfully diverting more than 90% of its waste. The stadium boasts a retractable roof with eight petals, accommodating 71,000 spectators for football and 32,456 for soccer, covering approximately 185,805 square meters. Its exterior design is reminiscent of a falcon's wing, while the Halo Board features a 360-degree display with over 37 million LEDs. Project costs escalated from $1.4 billion in 2014 to $1.5 billion by 2016, hosting over 50 events each year.
