Mellon Foundation awards $420,000 grant to New Britain Museum for Puerto Rican art initiative

The Mellon Foundation has awarded a $420,000 grant to the New Britain Museum of American Art for its ongoing project, Puerto Rico in Focus. This initiative aims to delve into the artistic connections between Puerto Rico and the United States through a series of exhibitions and research efforts. It launched with Pablo Delano's art installation, The Museum of the Old Colony, which debuted in March 2026. The funding will also support the development of bilingual scholarly catalogs for three future exhibitions and establish an Advisory Council of experts. Ultimately, the grant seeks to enhance public awareness of the intricate historical links between Puerto Rico and the U.S., emphasizing community involvement.
