MEDUM Studio Showcases Seven Inclusive Design Projects Prioritizing Human Needs

MEDUM, a Tokyo-based design studio founded by Shintaro Monden, focuses on creating products that address real human requirements through a blend of intuition and technology. The studio's philosophy centers on identifying specific problems before developing targeted solutions that balance functionality, inclusion, and aesthetics. Their work spans various sectors, including office furniture, mobility aids, and safety equipment, with projects like cocoe Ear, an open-ear hearing device for those with auditory challenges; KIKOALE, a dual-purpose megaphone-lantern for emergency situations; Shellmet, a helmet made from recycled scallop shells to reduce environmental impact; Wheeliy, a wheelchair designed for ease of use and comfort; PARA Ping Pong Table, adapted for para-athletes to highlight their unique perspectives; ext., modular office furniture for flexible workspaces; and walkey, a walking training service for improved mobility. MEDUM's contributions have earned international recognition, such as the iF Design Award, Red Dot Design Award, and Dezeen Awards. The studio will present an installation titled 'Light is Shadow' at Milan Design Week 2026 in the Tortona district, showcasing prototypes using inorganic electroluminescent materials to explore future design possibilities.
