MEAA Demands Urgent Action as Live Performance Crisis Deepens in Australia

The Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance (MEAA) is calling for government intervention following the cancellation or premature conclusion of significant Australian musical productions such as Beetlejuice! The Musical and Waitress, attributed to rising production costs and cost-of-living challenges. Other performances, including Back to the Future, Dear Evan Hansen, and Annie, also faced early closures. Michael Balk, the Federal President of MEAA, cautioned that the live performance sector is nearing a crisis point, impacting both performers and crew members. On July 13, an Emergency Live Performance Town Hall meeting attracted over 200 participants who discussed a Live Performance Action Plan. The MEAA has initiated a petition for a Live Performance Production Incentive and sent an open letter to Arts Ministers outlining five key requests, highlighting the cultural ramifications of the situation.
