Max Levai Opens Major Chelsea Gallery Space in Partnership with 47 Canal

Max Levai, former president of Marlborough Gallery, is launching a permanent 7,000-square-foot gallery in New York's Chelsea neighborhood this fall. Located at 529 West 20th Street, the flagship space represents his first fixed New York location after years of operating through pop-ups, international projects like his Frank Auerbach presentation at the 2024 Venice Biennale, and his Montauk compound, The Ranch. Levai stated that establishing a permanent gallery has been a long-term goal, motivated by providing a proper platform for his roster of artists. He believes Chelsea remains the center of the art market, offering the scale and flexibility his previous 900-square-foot Tribeca space lacked, which was suited for historical shows but never intended as permanent. The new gallery, owned by Eagle Point Properties and part of the 529 Arts building, features two distinct exhibition areas across two levels. Levai has brought in 47 Canal, the gallery co-founded and run by Oliver Newton, to operate the second program within the same address. The arrangement involves two independent galleries sharing the building with separate offices and programs, described by Levai as co-existing rather than collaborating. This setup allows Levai to maintain scale without bearing the full financial burden, enabling him to take risks essential for developing as a primary market gallery. The Chelsea location will allow him to expand beyond historical presentations, like his Renate Druks show in Tribeca, to include contemporary work by artists he represents such as Daniel Lind-Ramos, Julius Von Bismarck, and Nancy Rubins. He also plans to bring exhibition formats developed at The Ranch, pairing contemporary artists with historical figures. The Ranch in Montauk continues as a seasonal site for projects requiring logistical freedom and landscape engagement, operating more like a kunsthalle. Levai's expansion comes during a period of market cooling, with many galleries reconsidering scale or closing. He acknowledges the timing is risky but views the opportunity as necessary for his development, framing the gallery as a structural upgrade designed to provide flexibility for artistic risk-taking and program building in a tighter market.
