Mauro Restiffe and Maria Manoella's Intimate Photobook 'Onda Avalanche Vulcão'

The photobook 'Onda Avalanche Vulcão' by Mauro Restiffe and Maria Manoella, published by Familia Editions in 2025, juxtaposes intimate photographs of the couple with vast landscapes. The series was first exhibited at Fortes D'Aloia & Gabriel gallery in São Paulo in August 2025. The book uses analog photography, different paper types, and a translucent cover to blur the line between body and landscape. It references art history works such as Velázquez's 'Las Meninas', Ingres's 'La grande Odalisque', Courbet's 'L'Origine du monde', Duchamp's 'Étant donnés', and Rembrandt's 'De Staalmeesters'. The project echoes Annie Ernaux and Marc Marie's 'L'Usage de la photo' (2005), recently published in Brazil by Fósforo in 2025. Ernaux won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2022. Restiffe's retrospective 'Álbum' at Pina Estação in 2017, curated by Rodrigo Moura, also explored family and public life. Manoella starred in 'Vermelho Russo' (2017), directed by Charly Braun, based on Martha Nowill's diary.
