Matter Of's 'New New Typography' Challenges 20th-Century Design Norms

The design studio Matter Of, in collaboration with Wiegand von Hartmann, has released 'New New Typography' via Sorry Press, a publication that challenges the notion that modern typography is confined to 20th-century ideologies. The title alludes to Jan Tschichold's groundbreaking 'new typography' declaration made in Central Europe a century ago. Featuring contributions from nearly 100 collaborators such as Adel Faure, Bye Bye Binary, and Man Ray, the book showcases works ranging from illustrated typefaces from 1602 to contemporary body-scanning designs. With a minimalist black-and-white design accented by cerulean touches and six distinct sans-serif typefaces, it includes 243 figures and six theoretical proposals, merging high design theory with modern irony.
