Matisse Museum in Nice Presents Comprehensive Collection from Artist's Personal Donation

The Musée Matisse in Nice is presenting an exhibition drawn from its core collection, which originated from a personal donation by Henri Matisse himself. In 1953, one year before his death, Matisse gave the city of Nice a foundational group of works, including the significant pieces 'Océanie, la mer' and 'Océanie, le ciel'. This initial gift was later expanded by his family, who contributed additional paintings, drawings, sculptures, illustrated books, ceramics, cut-out gouaches, personal objects, and models that inspired his creative vision. The exhibition spans four levels of the museum and covers the artist's entire career trajectory, from his early explorations to his late experimental works, including preparatory studies for the Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence. The display offers visitors an intimate glimpse into Matisse's studio environment rather than focusing on dramatic spectacle. The exhibition is scheduled to run until May 25, 2026, at the museum located at 164 avenue des Arènes de Cimiez in Nice.
