Mata Architects' Panoramic House extension integrates timber and glass in Hampstead

Mata Architects has completed a timber-clad extension named Panoramic House for a family home in Hampstead, London. The design features a glazed corner with large sliding glass doors that offer panoramic garden views and direct access to terraces. An overhanging, tapering roof provides shade and reduces heat, while a mirrored surface underneath reflects the garden. The extension sits lower than the main living space, which previously was 1.5 metres above the garden and disconnected by stairs, to better connect the home to the landscape. Founding director Dan Marks explained that lowering the floor allows the structure to sit gently within the garden, creating a sense of immersion. The studio worked with tree care specialists to navigate mature trees on the sloping site, establishing root protection zones and following natural contours. Inside, a simple palette includes timber floors, oak joinery, and limestone in bathrooms for cohesion. High-performance glazing, sheer curtains, and surrounding trees ensure year-round comfort and privacy. The photography is by Nick Dearden.
