Massimo De Carlo on art market crisis: 'Responsibility lies with everyone'

In a wide-ranging interview with Artribune, gallerist Massimo De Carlo discusses the current state of the art market, which he describes as being in a phase of suspension and questioning. He notes that traditional models are showing their limits, yet credible alternatives have not yet emerged. De Carlo also addresses the rising costs of art fairs, the need for recalibration, and the importance of the artwork itself as the most motivating factor for collectors. He confirms that his foundation project is ongoing but delayed due to technical complications. Regarding the Italian market, he welcomes the reduced VAT rate of 5% and the opening of international galleries in Milan, noting that opening in Italy remains relatively inexpensive. De Carlo reflects on his evolving role from being operationally focused to becoming an 'orchestrator' and stresses the need for a shared vision and rational communication across the art world.
