Maruani Mercier inaugurates second Brussels gallery with George Rickey kinetic sculpture exhibition

Maruani Mercier has launched a second Brussels location at Rue Saint-Georges 13 in Ixelles' gallery district, complementing its existing Avenue Louise base and Knokke outpost. The gallery's inaugural exhibition, 'George Rickey: Ordered Movement,' runs from April 22nd to June 6th, 2026, featuring smaller-scale kinetic sculptures from 1957 to 1997. Rickey's works, such as Trastevere Flower, Wild Carrot II, and Meander, explore motion through stainless steel elements that pivot and oscillate with gravity and airflow. The American sculptor, who died in 2002, shifted from painting to kinetic art after WWII, inspired by mechanical devices like a yacht's compass and his grandfather's clock shop. His sculptures are held in over 150 museum collections globally, including the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Kunstmuseum Bern, and Hakone Open-Air Museum. The new space aims to extend and refine the gallery's programming, emphasizing environmental sensitivity and temporal engagement. A public opening is scheduled for April 22nd from 4PM to 9PM.
