Marla Jobst's 'Wanderchild' Explores Liminality Through Fashion

German fashion designer Marla Jobst presents 'Wanderchild,' a debut collection that investigates states of in-betweenness—between belonging and estrangement, concealment and revelation, memory and invention, and the earthly and otherworldly. The collection does not define a destination but inhabits a threshold where identities, places, and narratives remain fluid. Figures emerge through layers of transparency, veiling, and fragmentation, with faces obscured and silhouettes transformed. Materiality is central: deconstructed ballet shoes from former professional dancers are embedded as remnants of discipline; fragments of vintage lace, crystallised letters, preserved maple seeds, and organic interventions are suspended between preservation and decay. A sleeve woven from willow branches extends beyond the body's logic, and crystallised elements blur distinctions between garment, relic, and artefact. Subtle influences from Jobst's childhood near the Baltic Sea appear as fragments—sailor-inspired forms dissolve into mantilla veiling. Custom-styled wigs and sculptural headpieces further destabilise identity, creating figures caught between ritual, memory, and imagination. The collection proposes fashion as emotional and spatial world-building, creating a landscape for those existing between states. The project was photographed and videographed by Sidney Erbe, with styling by Jobst, and models including Angelita Ghen, Romy Sophie Lucia Herbsleb, and Grace Kerkhof.
