Markus Lüpertz and Neo Rauch Create Stained Glass for Naumburg Cathedral

Markus Lüpertz has designed four new stained glass windows for Naumburg Cathedral, addressing the themes of salvation and damnation. The 85-year-old German artist, known for his expressive style, intentionally contrasts his work with the medieval architecture. The windows were commissioned by the Vereinigten Domstifter zu Merseburg und Naumburg. Neo Rauch, a leading figure of the Neue Leipziger Schule, previously created three stained glass windows for the cathedral's Elisabethkapelle in 2007. Rauch's windows are 1.40 meters high and 50 centimeters wide, made from ruby red mouth-blown glass, depicting scenes from the life of Saint Elizabeth. Naumburg Cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2018, is celebrated for its interplay of architecture, sculpture, and stained glass.
