Mark Wahlberg plays Mafia informant Gregory Scarpa Sr. in 'By Any Means'

Elegance Bratton's film 'By Any Means', starring Mark Wahlberg as Colombo crime family capo Gregory Scarpa Sr. and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an FBI agent, opens in theaters on September 4. The movie depicts Scarpa's secret alliance with the FBI during the 1964 Freedom Summer in Mississippi, where he used violent tactics to locate the bodies of three slain civil rights workers—James Chaney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner—buried under 14 feet of clay. Scarpa also assisted in the 1966 firebombing case of Vernon Dahmer. Wahlberg underwent cosmetic alterations to resemble Scarpa, and his son Gregory Scarpa Jr. and daughter Linda served as advisers. Bratton described the film as 'a story about justice moving through corrupted systems.' The real Scarpa died in 1994 at age 66 from AIDS complications while serving a life sentence.
