Mariae Cassandra: triple j Unearthed High Winner on New Music and Upcoming Project

Perth/Boorloo artist Mariae Cassandra, who won triple j Unearthed High in 2024 at age 16, has since released more music, performed at festivals including Laneway, showcased at BIGSOUND, and opened tours for BoyWithUke and Spacey Jane. She has also toured nationally with Wafia, Kita Alexander, and Maggie Lindemann. In a frankie magazine interview from issue 134, she discussed her single "Splinters," co-written with Tom Eggert at 16 and revisited at 18, which explores the conflict between embracing love and healing while being held back by emotional wounds. She cited Billie Eilish's earlier music as her first musical love, discovered at age 10 or 11. On tour, she craves strawberry matcha and noodle cups. Cassandra is working on an upcoming project she calls her most intentional body of work, and she expressed a desire to collaborate with Florence Road, praising their song "Hanging Out To Dry." Her favorite songs to perform are "Maybe It All Works Out In The End" and "Theodore." Outside music, she journals, attends church, paints, and enjoys going to gigs. She emphasized her sentimental nature and the importance of her faith. The interview appears in frankie issue 134, available via the frankie shop, subscription, or stockists.
