Marcus Jansen's Counterpoint Chronicles Four Decades of Expressionist Practice

Marcus Jansen, a modern expressionist known for confronting injustice, racism, authoritarianism, imperialism, and political machinery, has announced the forthcoming publication of Counterpoint. This collection marks the first book produced under his complete editorial and creative control, personally curated and including his own reflections on inspirations, interpretations, and messages behind the works. The publication coincides with the autumn 2026 milestone of four decades since his artistic production began in 1986, tracing his evolution from 1980s graffiti culture to a mature, globally recognized painting practice. Counterpoint reflects the sustained social, political, and psychological concerns shaping his oeuvre. The year also marks the 20th anniversary of his discovery by Jerome Donson, former director of traveling exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art, who compared Jansen's art to the socio-critical Ashcan School and hailed him as an innovator of modern expressionism. Jansen's work has appeared in museum installations and exhibitions internationally, defined by a collision of painterly expression, urban visual language, and political critique. Ahead of publication, 100 signed collector's copies are available for pre-order until 31 October 2026, with no plans for further autographed copies.
