Marcus Bunyan's 'Metropolis' Series Transforms Historic Brewery Images

Australian artist Marcus Bunyan has released 'Metropolis,' a photographic series created between 2025 and 2026. The project comprises 75 images derived from archival photographs of Dublin's St. James's Gate Brewery, originally published in a 1931 historical book. Bunyan digitally manipulated these source materials through reflection, distortion, overlapping, and filtering techniques to achieve specific atmospheric effects. The series draws inspiration from Fritz Lang's 1927 film 'Metropolis,' Dora Maar's surrealist photography, modernist industrial photography by Jakob Tuggener and Albert Renger-Patzsch, and Giovanni Battista Piranesi's 18th-century prison etchings.
