Marco Cavazzin’s Debut Short ‘Mutrion’ Explores Belonging in the Venetian Lagoon

Venice-born director Marco Cavazzin has released his debut narrative short film, 'Mutrion,' which examines community identity in the Venetian Lagoon through a grotesque local legend: inhabitants of a secluded island must painfully shed their big toenail to reach maturity. The film follows Marco (Manfredi Marini), nicknamed 'Mutrion' (sulky), who left the archipelago at twenty and returns four years later to face a closed, ambiguous community governed by unspoken rules. His alienation is contrasted with childhood friend Maicol (Giulio Maroncelli), a fisherman continuing his family’s lineage. Written by Cavazzin and Alessandro Padovani, the film treats the detached nail as a bodily relic and symbol of passage. Supported by Film Commission Veneto and produced by Etimo, the project features cinematography by Francesca Pavoni and editing by Christian Marsiglia. Distributed by Cattive Distribuzioni, 'Mutrion' uses a dry, deliberate cinematic language to capture the silence and wild vegetation of the Venetian islands.
