MARCO Appoints Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy as First Curator-at-Large in Mexico

Sofía Hernández Chong Cuy has been appointed as the inaugural Yolanda Santos de Hoyos Curator-at-Large at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Monterrey (MARCO), a position the museum claims to be unprecedented in Mexico. This announcement was made on August 25 and is part of MARCO's initiative to reevaluate how it presents and interprets its permanent collection, especially considering the cultural intricacies of northern Mexico and its connections to the U.S.-Mexico border. Sponsored by art collector and philanthropist Yolanda Santos de Hoyos, Hernández Chong Cuy, who hails from Mexicali, Baja California, and has over 20 years of curatorial expertise, previously directed Kunstinstituut Melly in Rotterdam from 2018 to 2023. Her work emphasizes transnational dialogues, particularly between Latin America and other areas. At MARCO, she will focus on creating new interpretive frameworks, engaging local communities, and promoting cross-border partnerships, reflecting a trend in Mexican museums to establish curatorial roles that address regional and binational issues.
