Marc Restellini's Definitive Modigliani Catalogue Raisonné Published After Decades of Controversy
On 14 April, the Institut Restellini and Yale University Press released Marc Restellini's catalogue raisonné of Amedeo Modigliani's oil paintings. This extensive six-volume set, priced at £2,000, verifies 421 paintings through forensic techniques, introducing 100 newly authenticated pieces while excluding 15 due to lack of evidence. Launched in 1997 with the backing of dealer Daniel Wildenstein, Restellini's endeavor encountered legal disputes, notably a 2020 lawsuit against the Wildenstein Plattner Institute. This new publication supersedes the 1972 catalogue by Ambrogio Ceroni, which documented only 337 works. Given the high market prices for Modigliani's art, accurate authentication is crucial.
