Marc Newson's Electra sculpture resurfaces at Château La Coste exhibition spanning 40 years

Marc Newson's 6m-tall aluminum sculpture Electra, originally created for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics but never installed, now greets visitors at Château La Coste near Aix-en-Provence. The piece has been fully restored after traveling worldwide in crates for over three decades. Electra introduces a comprehensive exhibition of Newson's work running from 15 March to 21 June in Oscar Niemeyer's final building, a glazed pavilion on the estate. Newson collaborated with Château La Coste owner Paddy McKillen, a design and art collector who owns several of his pieces, to curate 15 works that blur design and sculpture. The selection includes the 1988 Lockheed Lounge, borrowed from a private collector, and a 2017 green translucent glass armchair crafted with Czech specialists. Los Angeles collector Philip Serafim, known for concept cars including Newson's 1999 Ford design, has acquired Electra. Newson describes the exhibition as a highly curated survey reflecting four decades of his practice, chosen for cultural and physical relevance to the sculpture-filled landscape of Château La Coste.
