Marc Newson Reflects on Design Legacy and High-Value Works in French Retrospective

Australian designer Marc Newson is currently featured in a retrospective exhibition at Château La Coste in southern France, running from March 15 to June 21, 2026. The showcase highlights his four-decade career in collectible design, including his iconic Lockheed Lounge chaise longue, which holds the auction record for a living designer's work at £2.5 million in 2015. Newson discussed his approach to design in an interview, noting that while he never intended his pieces to be expensive, quality often comes at a cost. He is recognized as a pioneer in the design art movement, now known as collectible design, and remains the sole designer represented by Gagosian gallery. His diverse portfolio includes collaborations with major brands such as Apple, Louis Vuitton, Ferrari, and Hermès, as well as projects like a superyacht for Roman Abramovich. Currently, Newson is working with Jony Ive at LoveFrom on Ferrari's first electric car and an OpenAI device, emphasizing tactile and material simplicity in technology. The exhibition also features other significant works like the Event Horizon table and Cloisonné seating, illustrating his focus on material craftsmanship.
