Manu Gomez's Solo Exhibition 'À beira-mar, somos muitos' Opens at Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro

The Centro Cultural Correios Rio de Janeiro will launch the exhibition 'À beira-mar, somos muitos' on March 25, 2026, at 4 PM. This marks the first solo show by artist Manu Gomez, curated by Jean Carlos Azuos. The display features 13 new paintings created between 2025 and 2026 in various sizes, including a large mosaic measuring 2.20 by 3.80 meters, and a central gallery installation from Gomez's series 'Sonhos dos Invisíveis.' The works explore themes of memory, labor, and communal life, drawing inspiration from the artist's family history, particularly her father's experiences with underwater fishing in Arraial do Cabo. Visual metaphors such as schools of fish symbolize collective strength and survival strategies, while the sea represents both sustenance and challenge for fishing communities. Gomez integrates human and animal forms to reflect on how work and subsistence are organized around nature and community. The exhibition includes a fragmented installation of 24 canvases arranged as a puzzle, evoking collective thought and movement, and incorporates everyday objects like a transport cart and cans to connect themes of labor, consumption, and circulation. The show runs from March 25 to May 9, 2026, with free admission. Manu Gomez is a Rio de Janeiro-based visual artist and student at the Escola de Belas Artes (EBA/UFRJ), focusing on racial issues and Black narratives in Brazilian history through painting and social memory.
