cultural-heritage · 2026-10-09

According to director Stefano L'Occaso, the restoration of Palazzo Ducale in Mantua, which suffered damage from the Emilia-Romagna earthquakes in 2012, is now 99% finished. This historic complex, spanning 35,000 sq. m and featuring 1,000 rooms, has been under restoration for 14 years at a cost of approximately €15m. By late 2016, repairs to the bell tower and Andrea Mantegna's Camera Picta were completed. Recent efforts included cleaning the southwest tower, which now boasts an earthquake-resistant floor, and the Appartamento Grande di Castello reopened in July. The Sala delle Sigle is set to reopen by the end of the year, and a special exhibition will be held from 10 October to 10 January 2027. The palace has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2008.
