institutional · 2026-06-12

On September 17, Manfred Honeck, who has served as the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra since 2008, was named Principal Conductor of the Philharmonia Orchestra, taking over from Santtu-Matias Rouvali. His five-year tenure will commence in September 2028. Honeck first led the Philharmonia in 2024 and is set to return for the 2026–27 season. Additionally, he will assume the role of Festival Director in San Francisco for the 2028–29 season, where he will oversee an annual festival centered on themes such as love and death. Honeck's contract with Pittsburgh extends through the 2032–33 season, during which he aims to limit other commitments to prioritize his work in Pittsburgh, London, and San Francisco. He has previously conducted the Stuttgart State Opera and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, and his recordings with the Pittsburgh Symphony include acclaimed pieces by Shostakovich and others.
