Man Ray's Language-Centric Retrospective 'M for Dictionary' Opens in Milan

A major retrospective titled 'Man Ray: M for Dictionary' is currently on view at Gió Marconi gallery in Milan, co-organized with Fondazione Marconi. Curated by Yuval Etgar and Deborah D’Ippolito, the exhibition marks fifty years since the artist's death and focuses on language as the guiding principle of his multidisciplinary practice. It reveals Ray not merely as a photographer but as a pioneer of conceptual and multimedia art who explored painting, drawing, objects, and multiples with expressive coherence. The show is structured into five thematic sections: 'The Alphabet' showcases visual wordplay through drawings; 'Light Writing' examines experimental photography and Rayographs; 'Body Language' delves into portraiture; 'Objectives' presents one of the largest assemblies of his objects; and a section on mathematical objects explores aesthetic inspiration from scientific forms. The exhibition highlights Ray's 1969 solo show at Studio Marconi—the gallery's first presentation of his work—and underscores his desire to be recognized as a painter. His linguistic play connected deeply with Marcel Duchamp, forming a distinct branch of Dada, and his American identity allowed for playful Anglo-French word games. A parallel project, 'In Other Words', features contemporary artists like Alex Da Corte and Simon Fujiwara, extending Ray's legacy. The retrospective celebrates the enduring relationship between Ray and gallerist Giorgio Marconi while looking forward to new interpretations.
