Malmö Launches Art Criticism Series with CC Hennix Retrospective Discussion

A new series of conversations about art criticism launches in Malmö on Thursday, April 16. Organized by critic Christine Antaya, the series is inspired by the Swedish Royal Academy of Fine Arts' critic salons in Stockholm. The inaugural event takes place at skēnē from 6-8 PM and will focus on the reception of Malmö konsthall's retrospective of experimental multimedia artist CC Hennix. Critics Dan Jönsson of Dagens Nyheter and Hedvig Weibull of Sveriges Television and Kunstkritikk will participate. Antaya selected these national media representatives as a counterpoint to Malmö's local art scene. The CC Hennix exhibition, which opened in 2026, has been widely praised by critics yet described as difficult to comprehend. Jönsson praised the show for making the impenetrable both accessible and beautiful, while Weibull noted its openness, suggesting that simplifying complex arguments can be more loving than showcasing all possibilities. Antaya emphasizes the series aims not to create debate but to discuss criticism's methods, perspectives, role, and function. The audience is welcome to participate, offering a rare chance to question critics directly. A second conversation is planned for May at Signal, though its theme remains undetermined. Antaya notes the challenge of finding exhibitions in Skåne reviewed broadly enough to facilitate such discussions, as many receive only one or two reviews.
