Major Exhibition Revives Austrian Open-Air Painter Tina Blau in Kaiserslautern

The Museum Pfalzgalerie Kaiserslautern presents 'Tina Blau. Im Freien,' the first comprehensive retrospective of the Austrian open-air painting pioneer in over a century, running from January 31 to May 25, 2026. Supported by the Kulturstiftung der Länder with €66,500, the exhibition aims to restore visibility to Blau (1845–1916), who achieved significant success during her lifetime but is now largely unknown outside Austria. The show features approximately 50 works, including loans from Austria, Germany, and the United States, alongside Blau's key painting 'Apriltag im Prater' (1889) from the museum's collection. Blau was a leading figure in plein air painting, exhibited at world expositions in Antwerp (1885), Paris (1889), and Chicago (1893), and founded art schools for women in Vienna and Munich. The exhibition is organized thematically, covering her Prater landscapes, travels, and influence within the Munich School, accompanied by a publication to reinstate her position in early modern art history.
