Maison Margiela unveiled its Fall/Winter 2026 collection in Shanghai, marking the fashion house's first presentation in China. The show featured both ready-to-wear and Artisanal pieces, returning to a format reminiscent of the brand's early years. The collection explores transformation through material innovation, with porcelain reinterpreted using intricate layering techniques. Dresses made from multiple printed glass organza layers create glazed surfaces, while ceramic fragments are individually fired and assembled onto garments. Vintage clothing is fused onto new bases and then removed, leaving ghostly impressions that become the garments themselves. Textiles include restored tapestries with hand embroidery and antique fabrics transformed into couture pieces. Edwardian silhouettes appear throughout, subverted through Margiela's signature techniques like second-skin constructions and bianchetto painting. The bianchetto technique evolves into sculptural forms, with garments painted, baked, and cracked to reveal layered textures.
