MADD Bordeaux Reopens After Three-Year Transformation

After three years of renovation, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs et du Design (MADD) in Bordeaux has reopened, unveiling a redesigned space that bridges its historic buildings and contemporary design. The project, led by architects Aymeric Antoine and Pierre Dufour, addressed functional needs such as accessibility, conservation, and energy efficiency while preserving the site's historical layers. The museum now offers a fluid path connecting the Hôtel de Lalande, the adjacent stables, and the former prison, with a steel structure that is fully reversible. The renovation also introduced new galleries, including a room dedicated to ceramics and a retrospective of designer Pauline Deltour, who died in 2021. The museum's collections span from Neolithic artifacts to Art Deco, with highlights including works by René Buthaud and contemporary pieces. The full reopening is scheduled for the end of 2027, when the restoration of the Hôtel de Lalande will be complete.
