Lykke Li's New Album The Afterparty Marks Existential Era with Maximalist Production

Swedish singer-songwriter Lykke Li is preparing to perform material from her sixth studio album The Afterparty at Coachella in Indio. The album, set for release on May 8, represents a significant shift from her previous work, described as more hopeful, inquisitive, and philosophical. Recorded in Sweden with a 17-piece string section and numerous drummers and vocalists, the production contrasts sharply with her 2022 album EYEYE, which was made in her Los Angeles bedroom. Li characterizes this period as her "existential era," moving beyond the plaintive themes of earlier records. She drew inspiration from performing with the Swedish Radio Symphonics while pregnant, calling it her best musical experience. The album's creation involved reading about mother artists like Doris Lessing, Alice Neel, and Louise Bourgeois in the book The Baby on the Fire Escape, as Li navigated the tension between motherhood and artistic identity. She developed a masculine, hedonistic alter ego for her work, creating a stark division from her maternal self. While she has suggested this might be her final album in her current incarnation, Li clarifies she will continue making music, possibly in different forms beyond solo artistry.
