Lumache Restaurant in Victoria Celebrates Slow Food Movement with Saksun Studio Design

A new Italian restaurant called Lumache has opened in Victoria, British Columbia, founded by Heather Dosman and James Frost. The establishment's name, meaning 'snails' in Italian, reflects its commitment to the slow food philosophy, featuring handmade pasta prepared with traditional methods and contemporary touches. The interior design was created by Vancouver-based Saksun Studio, led by principal designer Claire Saksun, who previously designed the award-winning Softer Drink Shop in Victoria. The space centers around an open kitchen to highlight the culinary process, with only three tables and six bar seats for an intimate atmosphere. Design elements include a trompe l'oeil wall treatment inspired by Northern Italian architecture, custom fabric pendant shades resembling mollusc shells, Murano glass lighting, hand-turned table legs by millworker Craig McWilliam, and a painting by artist Andy Hurt. Tableware was sourced from local grandmothers, including Saksun's own, and candlesticks from the owners' wedding. The restaurant's launch coincides with actor Hudson Williams' comments about Victoria's calm pace during Paris Fashion Week, which sparked local discussion but was later clarified as appreciation for the city's stabilizing environment. Lumache exemplifies Victoria's vibrant but unhurried creative and culinary scene.
