Luke Jerram's Helios Installation Presents Detailed Solar Sphere at UK Heritage Sites

British artist Luke Jerram has created Helios, a seven-meter-diameter spherical installation that represents the Sun at a scale of 1:200 million. The internally illuminated artwork uses high-definition solar imagery derived from scientific data, including contributions from astrophotographer Dr. Stuart Green and NASA observations. Co-commissioned by organizations such as the National Trust and Liverpool Cathedral, the touring piece is currently displayed at various heritage locations across the United Kingdom and internationally. The sculpture depicts specific solar features like sunspots, spicules, and filaments, and references solar activity that caused Northern Lights visibility in the UK during May 2024. A custom soundscape by Duncan Speakman and Sarah Anderson accompanies the visual experience. The project was developed with guidance from Professor Lucie Green of University College London to ensure scientific accuracy while creating an accessible public encounter with celestial phenomena. Jerram's work follows his previous astronomical installations like Museum of the Moon and Gaia, continuing his practice of translating complex scientific concepts into large-scale public art. The installation invites viewers to contemplate humanity's relationship with the Sun and the broader cosmos within architectural settings like cathedrals and urban spaces.
