Lucy Sante's Memoir 'D'elle à moi' Chronicles Late Gender Transition and Immigrant Experience

American writer and critic Lucy Sante has published the French translation of her memoir 'D'elle à moi' through Éditions Phébus. The book details her late gender transition, which she announced to loved ones in 2021 at age 67 after decades of repressed identity. Sante intertwines this personal journey with her experience as a Belgian immigrant in the vibrant New York of the 1970s and 1980s. Her work, originally published in English, was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The memoir explores more than sixty years of silence and self-discovery, presenting what Sante describes as a process of becoming whole. The French edition became available on April 6, 2026.
