Lucy Orta's 'Trame di Comunità' Installation at CasermArcheologica in San Sepolcro

Lucy Orta, a British artist based in Paris, has created an environmental installation titled 'Trame di Comunità' at CasermArcheologica in San Sepolcro, Tuscany. The work centers on community and features five tents made from old hand-woven linen and hemp sheets, referencing the tent archetype depicted in Piero della Francesca's 1445 'Polittico della Misericordia'. Curator Simonetta Carbonaro describes it as a 'camp of belonging and resilience' meant to be experienced rather than merely viewed. During her residency, Orta engaged with 33 local residents, embroidering their portraits onto the fabric and posing questions about what is said, left unsaid, and whether local voices can become universal. The installation includes 99 small terracotta amulets hanging from the structures, evoking Tuscan earth tones and natural forms. CasermArcheologica, directed by Laura Caruso and founded by Ilaria Margutti, is presented as a 'space of possibility' rather than a museum, emerging from a 2013 urban regeneration project that transformed a historic building from a noble residence to a Carabinieri barracks. The initiative began with students cleaning the abandoned site and evolved into a structured cultural center hosting artists like Flavio Favelli, Luca Bertolo, and Laura Cattabianchi. The installation reflects the venue's mission to create community through artistic production and active citizen participation.
