Lucca Exhibition Explores Giovanni Boldini's Career Through Comparative Display

A major exhibition dedicated to Giovanni Boldini (1842–1931) is currently on view in Lucca, Italy. Titled 'Giovanni Boldini. La seduzione della pittura,' the presentation is installed at the Cavallerizza venue and traces the artist's entire career through comparative analysis with his contemporaries. The show highlights Boldini's journey from his native Ferrara to becoming a celebrated figure in Paris, the global cultural capital of his time. His artistic evolution is examined, beginning with his early involvement with the Italian Macchiaioli movement in Florence, where he settled in 1862 and engaged with artists like Telemaco Signorini and Silvestro Lega. The exhibition then follows his move to Paris, where from 1867 onward he immersed himself in French Impressionist circles, finding particular affinity with Edgar Degas. Boldini established himself as a portraitist of Parisian high society during the Belle Époque. A key focus of the display is his renowned depictions of women—including actresses, aristocrats, and dancers—noting how his psychologically nuanced portraits, with their dynamic brushwork, have been seen as precursors to later movements.
