Louvre-Lens Exhibition Explores Over 1000 Years of Orientalism Through Critical Lens

The Louvre-Lens museum is presenting a major exhibition titled 'Par-delà les Mille et Une Nuits. Histoires des orientalismes' from March 25 to July 20, 2026. Curated by Annabelle Ténèze, Souraya Noujaim, and Gwenaëlle Fellinger, the show features approximately 300 works spanning painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and video. It examines more than ten centuries of artistic fascination with the Orient, tracing exchanges between East and West from pilgrimages and crusades through commercial agreements and cultural encounters. The exhibition critically addresses how European artists have often presented biased or fantastical representations of Eastern cultures. Historical works from the Louvre and other lenders are displayed alongside contemporary pieces that question this legacy. Notable artworks include John Frederick Lewis's 1826 view of Cairo, Ingres's 'Tête de la Grande Odalisque' (c. 1820), and contemporary works by artists like Nazanin Pouyandeh, whose 2024 painting references the death of Mahsa Amini. The show also features objects such as Byzantine crosses, Ottoman wicker shields, Iznik ceramics, and the so-called Baptistère de Saint Louis, highlighting material exchanges. Sections explore 19th-century collectors' interiors, though these are noted as somewhat sparse in presentation. Contemporary works are integrated throughout, including Waël Shawky's film 'Cabaret Crusades' (2010-2015) and Fatima Mazmouz's installation 'Super Oum Constellation' (2026). The exhibition aims to broaden the concept of Orientalism beyond stereotypical imagery, emphasizing its complex historical roots and ongoing relevance.
