Louvre Launches €800,000 Fundraising Campaign to Restore Cour du Sphinx

cultural-heritage · 2026-10-01

The annual Tous mécènes fundraising initiative has been initiated by the Louvre, aiming to gather €800,000 by January 19, 2026, for the Cour du Sphinx's restoration. This marks the inaugural campaign dedicated to architectural restoration. The renovation will involve replacing the glass roof from 1934 with a new design that enhances the glazing area and incorporates natural ventilation, along with underfloor heating for the flooring. Chief architect Michel Goutal and the firm WHY-BGC are overseeing the project, which is expected to finish in 2029. Dating back to the mid-17th century, the Cour du Sphinx served as a walkway for Queen Anne of Austria. Public naming suggestions are welcome until November 23. The campaign has attracted over 400 donors and is part of the 'Louvre – Nouvelle Renaissance' initiative announced by Emmanuel Macron in January 2025.
