Louisiana State Museum's reaccreditation deferred to 2027 amid operational challenges
The Louisiana State Museum system's reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums has been postponed until June 2027, with its status remaining under review. Director Rebecca Mackie confirmed the tabling decision allows the museum to address governance and operational structure issues across its ten statewide sites. An AAM email clarified that institutions omitted from a recent press release, like LSM, either had decisions deferred or tabled, with tabling typically lasting one year to resolve specific concerns. Mackie noted about 30% of museums face tabling during commission meetings, and most ultimately receive accreditation after addressing identified problems. LSM, last accredited in 2011, has encountered lawsuits, public controversy, and an unfavorable audit in recent years, alongside reports of low morale and high staff turnover. Its collections, owned by the State of Louisiana, include works by Gertrude Morgan, Louis Armstrong's first cornet and bugle, and extensive Mardi Gras memorabilia. The museum system comprises venues such as the New Orleans Jazz Museum and the Louisiana Civil Rights Museum. In contrast, two other Louisiana museums—Shreveport's Meadows Museum of Art and the Historic New Orleans Collection—were recently reaccredited by AAM, as announced in a press release.
